Salt Therapy: What Are the Benefits, and How Does It Work?

Salt therapy has been around since the 1800’s, but has recently gained in popularity as a treatment for allergies, respiratory ailments, and possibly other conditions. Many people are curious about this treatment and how it might work for them.

Exploring the Benefits of Salt Therapy

Salt therapy typically takes place in a “salt cave”, which can be any large, arid space lined with Himalayan sea salt. You may have one local to you here in Port St. Lucie, or wherever you may live. Here’s an article one reporter did for the Today Show after visiting their local salt cave.

Some background: In 1843, Polish doctor Feliks Boczowski realized that his patients who worked in salt mines didn’t seem to have any respiratory problems. He theorized that inhaling salt was the reason, and salt caves soon became a popular European treatment for pneumonia, bronchitis, and other lung problems.

But in the 1800’s, it wasn’t always practical for everyone to travel to a natural salt cave, which somewhat limited halotherapy’s use. Today, practitioners throughout the US can build salt caves anywhere, or use a halogenerator to create one.

Why is salt so beneficial for the respiratory system? There are several theories. Some experts believe that the salt kills off microorganisms that may cause infection and congestion. Others think it reduces inflammation. It’s also known that salt draws water into the lungs, and this may help to thin mucus so it can be expelled more easily.

Some patients have reported that symptoms of mental health conditions like anxiety or depression also improve after a session in a salt cave. This may be due to the fact that these sessions are very relaxing and help ease stress. These benefits may also be useful for other conditions, including arthritis, psoriasis or other skin conditions, or other inflammatory issues.

Is Salt Therapy Helpful for Everyone?

A wide variety of patients can benefit from salt therapy. It’s not a pharmaceutical treatment, and has no known side effects. Many salt caves offer sessions for the whole family, including children. Athletes often find that salt therapy helps their performance or physical endurance.

Combining Salt Therapy With Other Treatments

Salt therapy may be effective on its own, but many people also benefit from combining it with other stress-relief techniques. Some caves offer yoga or massage in their salt caves. Other people like to relax, take a nap, or meditate in the salt cave. In this way they can receive the benefits of stretching and deep breathing at the same time as the benefits of inhaled salt (halotherapy).

Salt Therapy: The Spa Experience With Added Benefits

The best thing about salt therapy is its ability to provide a relaxing spa experience, with the extra benefit of clearer breathing, reduced inflammation, and stress relief. Like other spa treatments, it may rejuvenate the skin, as well as your mood, while helping you breathe easier. While utilizing the benefits of salt therapy, you should also keep up with other health treatments like acupuncture and chiropractic, for best wellness results.
