According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than one-third of US adults are overweight, and many obesity-related conditions, such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer, are among the leading causes of preventable death in the U.S.

There are many reasons people become overweight, including hormone imbalances, slowed metabolism, overeating, poor nutrition, and lack of exercise. Many trends in weight loss have surfaced over the past 30 years, like low fat diets, low carb diets and even diets with a combination of hormone injections and severe caloric intake restrictions. These trendy diets are rarely effective, and worse, can have serious negative impacts on your health. There may not be a magic pill or potion for weight loss, but fear not, there are some things you can do that will make a
significant change in your body composition.

One effective option is far from new, as it has been utilized by many cultures for over 3,000 years - acupuncture. Studies have shown that adding acupuncture to a program involving proper nutrition and physical activity can help patients lose, on average, twice as much weight.

Acupuncture can increase endorphins, the body’s natural “feel good” hormones, which reduce cravings and generally make you feel more positive. This can reduce binge eating. It also decreases the hormones that contribute to weight gain. Studies show leptin, insulin, and cortisol levels drop with acupuncture. Leptin regulates fat storage and metabolism and stimulates the feeling of being full. Insulin regulates carbohydrate and fat metabolisms and the absorption of glucose from the blood. Cortisol, the stress hormone, can affect weight in several ways. It disrupts digestion, contributes to depression and escalates your “fight or flight” response.

Finally, acupuncture promotes weight loss by increasing metabolism, improving insulin resistance, while also decreasing abdominal fat which aids in better digestion.
