SHINE For ADHD

Attention deficit hyperactive disorder is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders affecting children today. Signs and symptoms of children affected by ADHD include daydreaming, forgetfulness, excessive talking, difficulty resisting temptation, difficulty getting along with others, fidgeting, and lack of executive functioning. As of 2011, in the United States ADHD affects approximately 11% of our children between the ages of 4 and 17. These rates continue to climb, and since 2003 there has been a 5% increase each year in the number of children diagnosed with ADHD. The amount of male children between the ages of 4-17 diagnosed with ADHD has exceeded 13%.  Of the 11% of children diagnosed with ADHD, over 6% of them will take medications to curb their behavior.

These stats are alarming. Not only does ADHD affect the family and children from a psychological and societal aspect, but it also has a large socioeconomic impact, as the “cost of illness” associated with ADHD exceeds $50 billion. The college degree is one of the most sought after achievements for youths and their parents. Currently, only 5% of children with ADHD achieve a college degree as compared to 28% of the general population.

Medication is typically the primary course of treatment for children and adults with ADHD.  Medications primarily prescribed include non stimulatory (Strattera) and stimulatory (Adderall, Ritalin and Dexedrine). Common side effects associated with Strattera include headache, dizziness, mood swings, and stomach pain. Common side effects associated with the stimulatory drugs include depression, irritability, tics, headaches, dizziness and a decrease in appetite. Though medication is prescribed regularly, there have been mixed reviews regarding the long term effects associated on the youth brain.
